Once the air begins to cool and leaves start to change color, there’s nothing like filling your home with the cozy, comforting scents through a fall simmer pot. For me, this is the best time of year – it’s the perfect excuse to throw on sweats, sip some tea, and get cozy on the couch.
The best way to bring that fresh autumn smell indoors is to make a simmer pot. Simmer pots are one of the best ways to fill your home with that cozy cinnamon, spied cider, and vanilla smell. They are easy and natural, and the perfect way to fill your home with warm autumn scents. This post will show you exactly how to make a simmer pot.
What is a Simmer Pot?
If you have never heard of a simmer pot or never tried one – you’re missing out! Simmer pots are simple. They consist of a pot filled with water and your favorite ingredients for the season that you will let simmer on the stove, filling your house up with heavenly scents. Fall simmer pots are like a natural, super strength air freshener that you customize to your exact preference!
Fall Simmer Pot Ingredients:
One of the best things about simmer pots is that they’re so easy to make with ingredients you probably already have on hand. Here are some of my go-to ingredients for creating that perfect fall scent.
Essential Fall Ingredients
- Apples
- Cinnamon Sticks
- Nutmeg
- Citrus (Oranges or Lemons)
- Cloves
- Vanilla Extract
- Herbs (Rosemary, Thyme)
- Cranberries
Instructions:
Step 1: Grab Your Pot
Choose a medium to large saucepan – it is smart to dedicate a pot for this, or one that is older and you don’t mind getting slightly stained.
Step 2: Add Water
Fill your pot about halfway or slightly more full with water. When I make a fall simmer pot I like to keep it going all day long so I make sure to fill it full with water so it won’t boil dry throughout the day.
Step 3: Add Your Ingredients
In this step you can get creative and put your own unique spin on your fall simmer pot. Add the ingredients you want – there is no wrong way to do this! You can keep it simple with one or two ingredients or make your simmer pot layered by adding heavier ingredients frist and adding your herbs and spices on top.
Step 4: First Boil, then simmer
Bring your pot over to the stove and put on high heat until the water begins to boil. Once your water is boiling you can reduce head to low and let it simmer. You will so be surprised with how quickly your home begins to smell amazing. You can keep the simmer going as long as you’d like. After a few hours and the smell begins to fade you can refill your pot with additional water and ingredients to keep the smell lasting all day.
STEP 5: DISCARDING THE SIMMER POT
Make sure that you are keeping an eye on your simmer pot throughout the day, do not leave your house if this is going. Although simmer pots are safe, you want to occasionally check in our your pot and make sure there is still enough water in the pot and it hasn’t gone dry. When you are ready to discard your fall simmer pot at the end of the day, make sure the water is not longer hot and strain out ingredients to dispose of.
Variations of Fall-Scented Simmer Pots
Classic Apple & Cinnamon
This is the classic fall simmer pot – sweet and spicy. Add to the pot a sliced apple (i love honey crisp or gala) add a couple of cinnamon sticks, and a throw in a few cloves if you have them. To give your pot a fun pop of color, throw in a few orange slices to give it a fresh twist.
Citrus & Piney
Utilize herbs along with a sliced lemon or orange to get a fresh pine smell. Add a sliced lemon or orange and a dash of rosemary or sage. Top this off with a hint of lavender for a sweet top note. This scent is perfect if you want a light, fresh smell that wont overwhelm your home.
Spiced Cranberry
Cinnamon sticks, cranberry, and lemon. This recipe is festive and warm – perfect for the holidays.
Pumpkin Spice
Did someone say pumpkin spice? This is my favorite fall simmer pot – basic I know. Just add a few slices of pumpkin, cinnamon sticks, and a dash of nutmeg, cardamom, and cloves. After adding these ingredients, add a splash of vanilla extract to give it a sweet finish.
