DIY Doormat: This post will show you the 5 simple steps it takes to make a doormat in less than 30 minutes!

Learn how to make a super cute AND expensive looking front doormat for only a fraction of the price!

Crafting your own DIY doormat allows for endless creativity, letting you choose colors, patterns, and messages that reflect your personality or seasonal themes.

Here are some perfect doormat ideas for the year:

Spring: Floral and pastel colors with messages like “Hello Spring” or “Bloom Where You’re Planted” to welcome in the new season.

Summer: Embrace the sunny weather with doormats featuring beach themes, palm trees, or fun phrases like “Life’s a Beach”, “Hello Sunshine”, or my personal favorite “Sunny Days”.

Fall: Get cozy for fall with doormats adorned with pumpkins, falling leaves, or harvest themes. Messages like “Hello Fall” or “Hello Pumpkin”, or “Sweater Weather” can add a cozy, welcoming touch to your entryway.

Winter: Choose designs that incorporate the winter holidays, snowy weather, or getting cozy by the fireplace. Perfect saying for this season includes “Let It Snow” or “Warm Wishes”.

Holiday Themes: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, valentines’ day, and Easter are just a few of the holidays that are so fun to make an outdoor porch mat for. “Trick or Treat,” “Give Thanks,” or “Merry & Bright” can add festive cheer to your entrance.

The Inspiration:

While I was looking for a spring front porch matt, I fell in love with this doormat from MCGREE & CO. But it was $90…

I knew I couldn’t justify spending that much on a simple doormat. But I loved how cute it was without looking tacky. Which got me thinking, how easy it would be to make a duplicate? So, I decided to DIY it, and it turned out looking just like the original but for a quarter of the price!

Using this MCGREE & CO doormat as a guide, I recreated a $90 doormat for less than $20!

I’ll admit, being in my 20’s I probably blow my money on a lot of unnecessary purchases, and I like expensive things. Who doesn’t? But if I can find a way to make something look exactly the same as an expensive product for less, I’m all in.

Here’s the supplies you need:

  • Tape measure (optional)

Step 1:

Find a plain doormat! Amazon has the perfect plain doormat, otherwise target, hobby lobby, or any crafty store works great!

Step 2:

Using your painter’s tape (or whatever tape you can find) tape a snaking line in the middle of your doormat. I used a tape measure to find the middle of the mat and measured in 5 inches from each side so the tape was even on the mat.

Step 3:

Get the stencil letters you need for the doormat. Just like the MCGEE & CO doormat, I spelt out the phrase “SUNNY DAYS”. Before using any paint, lay out the letters to make sure you spaced them correctly on the line.

Step 4:

Using the first stencil, position it on the line. Using your foam brush and black paint, dab over stencil, making sure to cover the entire letter so there are no uneven spots. (the mat will absorb some paint so use more than you think)

Step 5:

Remove the tape when the pain is dry. Then Spray the entire doormat with flex seal Spray. This help protect the paint from rubbing off. This is optional but will help make your doormat last longer!
