HOW TO LIGHTEN HAIR WITHOUT BLEACH:

Natural Hair Lightening Products

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is a natural bleaching agent that contains citric acid. This acts as a natural hair lightener but can be dangerous if used alone in hair. So, it is recommended that either coconut oil or conditioner be added to protect your hair.

  • 1 part lemon juice
  • 1 part coconut oil
  • Small bit of water

Mix the juice of a squeezed whole lemon with a little water and then add equal parts of coconut oil or conditioner. Either will work, but coconut oil is the best for its moisturizing properties, hair growth stimulation, and ability to eliminate dandruff. Using a spray bottle, spray all over your head or on areas you want to focus on lightening. Sit in the sun for 30-60 minutes before washing out!

I recommend warming up the mixture slightly in the microwave to make sure the coconut oil melts completed and can evenly be applied.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is not only used as a natural cleaning product, but great for hair lightening. In addition to its hair lightening properties, it removes oil buildup from scalp, acts as a natural defrizzing agent, and promotes hair growth.

  • 1 part apple cider vinegar
  • 2 parts water

Mix apple cider vinegar and water together and spray all over hair using a spray bottle. Let this sit for 30-60 minutes before rinsing with water!

This method is very gentle, perfect if you are anxious about overdoing it and want a very subtle change. If you want bigger results, do this about twice a week until you get the results you’re looking for.

Vitamin C

Vitamin c is an ascorbic acid, so adding it to hair will remove some of the pigmentation of hair that has been colored to dark. This is perfect if you are wanting to remove the harshness of darkly dyed hair.

  • 20-30 crushed vitamin C tablets
  • 3-5 tablespoons of dye free shampoo

Crush 20-30 vitamin C pills, (depending on length of hair, for longer hair use 30 tablets) using a roller pin. Add this to 3-5 tablespoons of plain dye-free shampoo to create a paste. Wet your hair slightly with water using a spray bottle then apply paste to sit in your hair for approximately 60 minutes. Wash out paste from hair and apply condition to ensure hair stays moisturized.

This process can be repeated up to 3 times to continue to lighten hair. It is also possible to leave vitamin C paste in hair for longer that 60 minutes, even up to 2 hours, for more drastic results.

Hydrogen Peroxide and Baking Soda

Hydrogen peroxide is known to naturally lighten hair without drying it out like other bleaching agents can do. Baking soda is a natural cleansing agent, also making this a great natural lightening method for hair that has been dyed darker.

  • 1 part baking soda
  • ½ part hydrogen peroxide

Mix these two ingredients together to make a paste, and mix into hair, sitting for approximately 20-30 minutes before rinsing out.

Chamomile

Chamomile is a popular type of tea, but can also be used to lighten and brighten hair. It is also known for giving hair a gorgeous shine, preventing dandruff, and improving blood flow to the scalp to promote hair growth.

  • 1 part strongly brewed chamomile tea
  • 1 part apple cider vinegar

Mix ingredients together and spray on hair, leaving for about 60 minutes before rinsing with water.

Salt Water Spray

After a day in the ocean, you’ve probably noticed that your hair seems a little bit lighter. This is most likely from the salt water that was sitting in your hair all day.

  • 2 tablespoons salt
  • 1 cup water

Mix 2 tablespoons of salt water with 1 cup of water and spray into hair. Leave this on for 60 minutes while you sit in the sun and then rinse with water.
