These are a few easy tips and tricks for how to make your home smell good!
1. Candles
A fast and simple way to make your apartment smell amazing. Plus they make the cutest decor pieces. I love getting big candles from TJ Maxx. They have so many options, especially if you’re looking for classy, sheik candles. Crackle candles are also a cute type of candle that makes a fun crackle noise when burning- I love these for winter, they will make your room feel super cozy!
2. Deodorize your carpet
Combine baking soda and a few drops of essential oil together and gently sprinkle over the carpet. Let this sit on your carpet for a few hours before vacuuming up. This not only makes your carpets smell amazing, but the baking soda removes dirt and other stains.
3. Put a few essential oil drops inside the tube of your toilet paper roll
This is a trick I heard about on tiktok, and is actually super helpful in keeping your bathroom smelling fresh. This is one of my favorite scent hacks for my bathroom because you can’t see any evidence of it being there.
4. Essential oil diffuser
Get an automatic essential oil diffuser and use your favorite essential oils (you can find so many great ones on Amazon or Target) my favorite places to put these are my bedroom or living room!

5. Water/Fabric softener diffuser
If you love the smell of laundry and fresh linen, this is the best trick! Mix water with a teaspoon of fabric softener and put in your diffuser. It will make your whole house smell like laundry!
6. Essential oil on cotton ball
Add a few drops of essential oil on a cotton ball and toss in the garbage can before putting on a new bag. This helps cover that gross garbage scent! Sometimes I even will sprinkle a little bit of baking soda or spray Lysol in the bottom of the trash container before putting a new bag in to make sure my trashcan stays clean.
7. Wallflower
Wallflowers are one of the easiest and longest lasting ways to keep the rooms in your apartment smelling good. Bath & Body Works has super cute wallflowers and I am obsessed with their mahogany teakwood and Fiji white sand scent.
8. Refrigerator baking soda
Add a box of baking soda in the door of your fridge and replace it every few months. This helps absorb bad smelling odors from your fridge and keep your kitchen fresh
A lot of these tips include ideas that not only make your apartment smell amazing, but actually eliminates odors and dirt, giving the room a fresh, clean smell!
9. Indoor plants
Indoor plants are great decor pieces, but also can help freshen up a room. Jasmine, lavender, begonia, orchid, and Hoya plants are all fun and add a refreshing fragrance to your room. And they improve air quality and increase the oxygen levels in your room!
10. Fabric softener in toilet
Put a ¼ cup of fabric softener in the back tank of your toilet (lasts about 3 flushes or for an afternoon with guests over). This will make your whole bathroom smell like a fresh load of laundry. This was a popular tiktok trend that I found, but be warmed that there were several comments that putting softener in the tank of your toilet isn’t the best for it.
11. Simmer pot
My favorite summer simmer pot includes 1 sliced lemon, a bunch of mint leaves, 2 ginger roots sliced, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. In a Dutch oven or stove pot, add ingredients and fill halfway with water. Place on stovetop and bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. You can keep this going as long as you like, just keep an eye on the level of the water to make sure it doesn’t get to low, adding more water as necessary.
12. Lemon and ice for the garbage disposal
Squeeze a lemon (and even throw the lemon peel) down the garbage disposal with some ice cubes. Run this for a 15-30 seconds followed by some cold water. This cleans the garbage disposal and gives it a fresh scent!
You can even customize these cleaning tricks towards the season you are in, using fresh lemon and fruit smells for summer, pumpkin and vanilla for fall, and woody pine scents for winter. Following season scents is a great way to make your home smell good!
13. Warmed vanilla
Mix 1 tablespoon of vanilla, ¼ cup water, and a dash of cinnamon in a baking dish. Bake at 300 degrees for 15 minutes. This will make your whole house smell like vanilla!
14. Open the windows
Fresh air can do wonders for your apartment!
15. Scented pine cones
Buy or collect pine cones and rinse them with water to remove any dirt. Bake at 250 for 30 minutes (this causes the pine cones to dry out and open up) then 20-30 drops of essential oil on pine cones. Put pine cones in a sealed Ziplock bag overnight so they can absorb the scent. In the morning, place pine cones in a bowl or however you want to display them. The scent on the pine cones will last about two weeks!
16. Toilet gel stamps
Amazon has the cutest toilet stamps that attach to the side of your toilet bowl. They help prevent limestone and toilet rings with the added bonus of a fresh scent. These gel stamps are fairly low maintenance and easy to attach to your toilet bowl.
What I love about these hacks is that there are ideas that are super simple and take no effort, and others that are fun to try and also make good home decor!
