Want to make this simple DIY yarn hanging for your next craft night?
These Are The Supplies You Need:
- 3 Skeins of yarn – you can also use jute, hemp, nylon, or synthetic blends (or as many colors as you want!)
- Wooden rod (the first picture shows a twisted tree branch for a boho look, but a any stick works!
- Wall hanger (tack, command strip, or screws depending how you want to hang it)
- Scissors
Cut each piece of string 5ft long. (I like to start off cutting my strings a little longer)
Cut 20-30 pieces of string, depending on how big you want your macrame and how thick your string is.
Step one: Making a lark knot
You will first tie your string to the rod using a lark knot. To make this, take the string, fold it in half, and tuck the top of the loop up and over the rod. Then take the strings in front of the rod and bring them through the loop coming from behind. Pull on the strings to tighten the knot. Reference the pictures below for how to make this knot.
Repeat this with all your strings.
Tie this lark knot around the rod for all 30 pieces of string. Once you have done this, the basis of you yarn hanging is done! Now you can play around with the hanging string to make different designs.
Step two: Get Creative!
Ways to spice up your wall hanging:
- Braid: take three stands and braid them together
- Knot: gather a few strings together in a cluster, I did two, and about halfway down tie them in a simple knot
- Wrapping Strings Together: get creative and grab a few strings, whether they are next to each other or far apart, and twist them together to make a fun swirl pattern
- Unravel One Strand: take one of the strings and unravel it so it frays out
Try different patterns on your yarn until you are happy with what you’ve made and are ready to hang.
Step three: hang
There are several options to hang this DIY boho wall decor!
If the wall hanging is light, an easy option is to take a piece of yarn and cut it to about four feet. Tie the string to each the side of the rod. Then take a tack, nail, or command strip and attach it to the wall. In the picture above, only a tack is needed to hold the wall hanging in place. If the decor is a bit heavier, a nail or command strip could be used as a more sturdy option.
If you do not want your hanging to have a string attached to the top and want it to look more free flowing such as this decor piece, a long screw can be drilled through the wood and then into the wall! To do this you will just need screws and a drill!
